Bitcoin ATM Kennedy Town and the Southern District: the picture
The western and southern ends of Hong Kong Island don’t look like crypto country, but the machines are there. The COINHERO, CoinUnit and Localcoin lists we compiled on 6 October 2026 show 16 Bitcoin ATMs from Kennedy Town, Shek Tong Tsui and Sai Ying Pun down to Aberdeen, Ap Lei Chau and Pok Fu Lam: six from COINHERO, seven from CoinUnit and three from Localcoin. Geographically that splits into nine in the Western end and seven in the south, enough on each side to treat them separately.
As on the eastern Island, every one of the 16 is buy-only, and no crypto shop with a published address operates anywhere in the area. To sell for cash or deal face to face you’ll need to head to Central, Admiralty or Causeway Bay. All numbers here come from operator websites. We haven’t tested the machines in person, and a listing doesn’t guarantee a machine is working today.
Kennedy Town to Sai Ying Pun: nine machines
The Western machines line up along three Island line stations. Kennedy Town has three. Smithfield Road hosts two networks: Localcoin’s Smithfield Walk kiosk at Nos. 45–51, which the operator says is about two minutes straight ahead from Exit A and across one set of lights, and CoinUnit’s LaundrYup at Nos. 71–77. The third is Localcoin’s Sunshine Laundry at 5 Belcher’s Street: turn right out of Exit B, through Rock Hill Street and Sands Street, then about three minutes along Belcher’s. Shek Tong Tsui has one, at WASHours on Woo Hop Street.
Sai Ying Pun is the surprise. A mostly residential neighbourhood, it has five machines from three networks, every one in a 24-hour laundromat. COINHERO’s is at 11 Eastern Street. Localcoin’s Moon Laundry is at 98A Third Street; the operator’s directions take you right from Exit C up Bonham Road and through Centre Street. CoinUnit has three, on Water Street, at 180 Connaught Road West and at 273 Des Voeux Road West. If you live in Sai Ying Pun and want a small amount of Bitcoin, you have more options on your doorstep than many business districts do.
On fees: COINHERO charges unregistered users 13% plus HK$100 to buy (6.5% for members), and the first note must be HK$1,000 or HK$500. CoinUnit takes only HK$500 and HK$1,000 notes and shows its fee on screen only. Localcoin’s machine data says 13.5% plus HK$23, while its FAQ says fees are typically 5–8%; we show both and suggest trusting the screen. Because Sai Ying Pun’s three networks are within walking distance of each other, comparing on-screen quotes before you pay is the easiest saving you can make.
A typical case: a university student living in Sai Ying Pun has HK$1,000 in cash and wants to try a small amount of Bitcoin. The Localcoin machine on Third Street is closest, but on its own machine data the fee comes to about HK$158; the COINHERO machine on Eastern Street would take about HK$230. Flat fees weigh heavily on small buys. With a bank account, the same HK$1,000 sent by FPS to a licensed platform usually costs a few dollars. We won’t tell anyone which coin to buy, but we will say: work out the cost first. Our beginner’s guide walks through a first purchase.
Aberdeen, Ap Lei Chau and Pok Fu Lam: seven machines
The southern machines are more spread out, and two aren’t open around the clock. Aberdeen has three: the Meow Claw arcade on 1/F of Jumbo Building, 201 Aberdeen Main Road (daily 07:00–21:30), a laundry-and-convenience store at Abba Centre, 223–227 Aberdeen Main Road (24 hours), and a Speed Cut Center barber shop in Wah Kwai Shopping Centre (daily 10:30–20:30). Ap Lei Chau has three, on 4/F of Lei Tung Shopping Centre Phase 1, at Water Laundry on Ap Lei Chau Main Street and at Sunshine 24 in Ap Lei Chau Estate, all easiest from Lei Tung station on the South Island line. Pok Fu Lam has COINHERO’s machine in the iWash laundromat on 2/F of Chi Fu Landmark.
These are mostly estate-mall machines serving the people who live nearby. COINHERO’s list spells Lei Tung’s “Phase 1” as “Phrase 1”; the machine is on 4/F and listed as 24 hours, but whether you can reach it at night depends on the mall’s own opening arrangements. On Aberdeen Main Road the two machines are a short walk apart, but one runs 24 hours and the other shuts at 21:30, which matters late in the evening.

The real difference between West and South is transport. All nine Western machines sit near Island line stations, and Localcoin even publishes walking directions. In the south only Ap Lei Chau is close to the South Island line; Aberdeen and Pok Fu Lam mean a bus or minibus. If you’re just passing through, Sai Ying Pun and Kennedy Town are far easier.
Cyberport: the most blockchain firms in the city, and no ATM
The Southern District’s crypto story isn’t really about ATMs; it’s about Cyberport. According to the government’s hkengage site, Web3Hub@Cyberport houses more than 280 blockchain enterprises. Hash Blockchain Limited, which operates the SFC-licensed HashKey Exchange, lists its address in its privacy policy as Units 614–615, Level 6, Cyberport 3, 100 Cyberport Road. We took that from the policy earlier and did not re-check it in October 2026.

It’s a neat contrast if you work at Cyberport: surrounded by blockchain companies, yet if you want to buy with cash you still end up in a laundromat in a nearby estate. In practice most people working there already have a bank account and a licensed-platform account, so the machines matter little to them. HashKey’s fees, funding methods and limits are in our HashKey review, and the head-to-head with OSL is in HashKey vs OSL.
Sai Ying Pun has five machines and Cyberport has 280-plus blockchain firms, yet nowhere on the western or southern Island can you turn Bitcoin back into cash. We think this area works best as “buy online, top up at the ATM”: use a licensed platform day to day and the machine downstairs only when cash is the point.
ATM counts come from operator lists dated 6 October 2026; we have not tested the machines in person.
Selling, or dealing with a real person
There’s no sell machine and no shop here. Starting from Kennedy Town or the south, these are the practical options:
- Decide: cash or bank?
If you just want HKD in your bank account, selling on a licensed platform and withdrawing by FPS is usually cheapest, and you don’t have to leave home.
- Need cash: Island line to Causeway Bay
COINHERO’s flagship at 1A Canal Road East is the Island’s only sell machine, open 24 hours. Selling costs 13% plus HK$25 (6.5% for members).
- Want a person: Central on a weekday
Crypto HK’s Central counter is on 15/F, 9 Queen’s Road Central, Monday to Friday 10:00–19:00, a few Island line stops from Sai Ying Pun or Kennedy Town.
- Weekend, or coming from the south: Admiralty
The South Island line runs from Lei Tung straight to Admiralty. Crypto HK’s counter at Shop 51, 1/F Admiralty Centre opens Saturday 9:00–18:00 and Sunday 12:00–18:00.
Wherever you go, remember these counters are not SFC-licensed, and large cash deals are best done in daylight. Between December 2025 and March 2026, Sheung Wan saw three robberies linked to money-changing deals, one near Exit B of Sheung Wan station. If your route into Central passes through Sheung Wan, don’t count cash on the street. More in our cash-out guide and scams and licence checks.
Nearby areas and online alternatives
Heading east, Sheung Wan has three CoinUnit laundromat machines; Central has three machines, including one at the Star Ferry’s Central Pier No. 7, plus Crypto HK’s office-floor counter; Admiralty has no machines but two Crypto HK counters. Further on, Causeway Bay is the only Island district where you can sell.
Pros
- Five Sai Ying Pun machines from three networks, so you can compare quotes
- Western machines sit near MTR stations, with Localcoin walking directions
- Most are open 24 hours
- Cyberport’s blockchain cluster and licensed platforms close by
Cons
- All 16 machines are buy-only
- No crypto shop anywhere in the area
- Some southern machines close in the evening
- Aberdeen and Pok Fu Lam need a bus
Online, SFC-licensed platforms such as HashKey Exchange and OSL accept HKD by FPS and eDDA. ZA Bank and Mox offer crypto powered by HashKey, and Futu and Tiger let you buy inside their apps, though most of these don’t allow withdrawals to your own wallet. Compare them on our licensed platforms list and in bank and broker apps, or see every district on the areas map.
