Bitcoin ATM Quarry Bay: the Island’s busiest stretch
Looking for a Bitcoin ATM on the eastern Island? Quarry Bay and the neighbourhoods beyond it hold more machines than anywhere else on Hong Kong Island. The operator lists we compiled on 6 October 2026 show 14 from Quarry Bay through Sai Wan Ho and Shau Kei Wan to Chai Wan and Siu Sai Wan: eight from COINHERO, five from CoinUnit and one from Localcoin. Every one is listed as 24 hours, every one is buy-only, and there’s no staffed crypto shop anywhere along the route.
The press has noticed. A September 2026 South China Morning Post feature on “grey-market” crypto ATMs opened in a Quarry Bay self-service laundromat and cited a Coin ATM Radar estimate of 236 machines in the city, concentrated in Mong Kok, Tsim Sha Tsui, Wan Chai and Quarry Bay. Our own count from operator lists is about 202, broadly in line. Every number and address on this page comes from the operators’ websites. We haven’t tested the machines ourselves, and a listing doesn’t guarantee a machine is working today.
| Stretch | Machines | Networks | What’s there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarry Bay (King’s Road) | 5 | COINHERO 2, CoinUnit 3 | Monster Building; 4 within ~300 m |
| Sai Wan Ho | 3 | COINHERO 2, CoinUnit 1 | Laundromats on Tai On St and Hoi An St |
| Shau Kei Wan | 3 | COINHERO 2, Localcoin 1 | Claw arcade, mall toy shop |
| Chai Wan & Siu Sai Wan | 3 | COINHERO 2, CoinUnit 1 | Estates and industrial blocks |

The King’s Road five, from No. 883 to the Monster Building
Quarry Bay’s machines hug King’s Road. CoinUnit has one inside 883 Laundry at Lai King Building, 883 King’s Road. Further east, Washing Bo Laundry on the ground floor of Montane Mansion at No. 1028 hosts COINHERO’s Quarry Bay #1, and a short walk on, another Washing Bo at Yick Cheong Building, No. 1046, has a CoinUnit machine. Add Sunshine Laundry at 5 Pan Hoi Street and you get four machines within about 300 metres, the tightest spacing on the Island. The fifth is COINHERO’s unit in the Meow Claw arcade at Hoi Kwong Court on Hoi Kwong Street.
Montane Mansion is the block visitors know as the Monster Building, one of the most photographed residential buildings in Hong Kong. That means more foot traffic than a typical laundromat: tourists and photographers milling around the courtyard. If you want privacy, that’s a drawback; if you’re nervous about using a machine alone late at night, a few passers-by may be reassuring. Either way, people live there, so be considerate if you take pictures.
On fees, COINHERO charges unregistered users 13% plus HK$100 to buy (6.5% for members), with a HK$500 minimum and a first note of HK$1,000 or HK$500. CoinUnit takes only HK$500 and HK$1,000 notes, shows its fee on screen only, and handles sales through an online form. On this stretch the two networks’ machines are a few dozen metres apart, so it costs nothing to compare both screens before you commit.
Sai Wan Ho, Shau Kei Wan and Chai Wan: nine estate machines
Past Tai Koo the machines move into housing estates and neighbourhood shops. Sai Wan Ho has three: COINHERO at Sunshine Laundry in Lei King Wan on Tai On Street, CoinUnit at WASHours on Hoi An Street, and a COINHERO unit labelled “Sai Wan Ho” whose address is actually Hoi Lee Street, Shau Kei Wan. Shau Kei Wan has three more, including COINHERO’s Water Laundry on Shau Kei Wan Main Street East and a Clawee claw arcade at Aldrich Garden, plus Localcoin’s only machine in this part of the Island, at ToysPoint in Hing Tung Shopping Centre on Yiu Hing Road. Chai Wan has a COINHERO machine at Cheung Tat Centre on Cheung Lee Street and a CoinUnit machine in Tsui Wan Estate’s shopping arcade, while Siu Sai Wan has one in the Fullview Garden mall.
A worked example: someone who lives in Chai Wan and works at Taikoo Place wants to put HK$3,000 of payday cash into Bitcoin. At a COINHERO machine as an unregistered user, the fee is 13% plus HK$100, about HK$490, leaving roughly HK$2,510 of coins. Registering cuts the rate to 6.5%, at the cost of handing over identity details. The same money sent by FPS to a licensed platform usually costs a few dollars to a few tens of dollars in fees. That gap is why we keep saying compare first. Mind the notes, too: CoinUnit takes only HK$500 and HK$1,000, and COINHERO’s first note must be HK$1,000 or HK$500, so a wad of HK$100 bills won’t get you started.
COINHERO’s Siu Sai Wan entry reads “SUPPORT ONLY”, which sounds like a help point, but it’s an operator typo: it is a buy-only machine like the rest. These estate machines mostly serve the people who live above them. If you’re in Chai Wan or Siu Sai Wan, check downstairs before taking a bus to Causeway Bay.

On the SFC’s doorstep, outside the SFC’s licensing
The Securities and Futures Commission has its headquarters at One Island East in Taikoo Place, Quarry Bay. The SFC licenses and supervises virtual-asset trading platforms, but it isn’t an exchange, sells nothing and has no retail counter: walking into the building won’t get you any crypto or advice on a particular investment. What it does offer is a public list of licensed platforms. As of October 2026 that list names 13 licensed virtual-asset trading platforms and was last updated on 29 May 2026.

The irony is that all 14 Quarry Bay machines sit outside the SFC’s licensing net. Here’s how the rules have developed:
- 1 Jun 2023VATP licensing begins
Running a crypto trading platform in Hong Kong needs an SFC licence; the transitional period ended on 1 June 2024.
- 1 Aug 2025Stablecoins Ordinance in force
Only permitted offerors may offer stablecoins to the public; the government says OTC shops are not among them.
- 24 Dec 2025Dealing and custody conclusions
OTC shops, and likely ATMs, to come under SFC licensing with no transitional period.
- 29 May 2026SFC licensed list last updated
13 licensed platforms; unchanged when we checked on 6 October 2026.
- 6 Oct 2026Bill still not gazetted
ATMs and shops remain outside virtual-asset licensing for now.
For the full legal picture, see is crypto legal in Hong Kong; for a platform-by-platform comparison, see SFC-licensed platforms.
Quarry Bay combines one of the densest ATM stretches in the city with the regulator next door, but the two have nothing to do with each other. If you live on the eastern Island and have a bank account, a licensed platform funded by FPS beats the machines on almost every count. The ATM’s only edge is cash and immediacy.
ATM counts come from operator lists dated 6 October 2026; we have not tested the machines in person.
Grey-market ATMs: the SCMP warning
The SCMP piece describes the Quarry Bay machine as a waist-high terminal standing beside the washers, with signs nearby claiming that Elon Musk recommends Dogecoin. Its point was that machines in unattended spaces, with high fees and no SFC licence, are easy for fraudsters to exploit. A common pattern: a scammer on the phone or online persuades the victim to feed cash into an ATM and send the coins to an address the scammer controls. Once the coins leave, they are almost impossible to recover.
- A celebrity endorsement on a sign is not a reason to buy any coin, and we don’t recommend specific coins either.
- Anyone telling you to “put cash in an ATM and send me the Bitcoin” is a scammer. Call the 18222 Anti-Scam Helpline or check the address with Scameter.
- Use a receiving address from your own wallet, check it before you pay, and keep the receipt until the coins arrive.
- In 2025 the police recorded 5,135 online investment fraud cases with HK$3.58 billion lost, about a third involving virtual assets.
Apart from the SCMP feature using Quarry Bay as its example, our 2025–2026 crime log has no robbery linked to a crypto shop or ATM on the eastern Island. More on common tricks in scams and licence checks.
Nearby areas and online alternatives
One stop west, North Point, Tin Hau and Fortress Hill have 12 buy-only machines. Beyond them, Causeway Bay has the Island’s only sell machine, COINHERO’s flagship, plus shops from three brands. If you live in Shau Kei Wan or Chai Wan, Kwun Tong in Kowloon East is closer than it looks: it has One Satoshi and VBIT counters and a sell-capable machine at Yue Man Square (10:00–22:00). Tseung Kwan O has six more buy-only machines.

Frequently asked questions
Where are the Bitcoin ATMs in Quarry Bay?
Operator lists checked on 6 October 2026 show 14 between Quarry Bay and Chai Wan: five in Quarry Bay (including a laundromat at the Monster Building), three in Sai Wan Ho, three in Shau Kei Wan and three in Chai Wan and Siu Sai Wan. All are buy-only. See the Bitcoin ATM map for the whole city.
The SFC is in Quarry Bay. Can I buy crypto there?
No. The Securities and Futures Commission is a regulator with its headquarters at Taikoo Place in Quarry Bay. It doesn’t sell crypto or run a public counter. What it does publish is the list of 13 licensed trading platforms, which you can use to pick where to open an account. See our SFC-licensed platforms page.
Is there a crypto shop in Quarry Bay?
Not on any operator website we checked in October 2026, and the same goes for Tai Koo, Sai Wan Ho, Shau Kei Wan and Chai Wan. The nearest Island counters are in Causeway Bay; from Chai Wan or Shau Kei Wan, Kwun Tong across the harbour is another option. See crypto shops.
Are laundromat Bitcoin ATMs a scam?
The machines are publicly listed by their operators, so they aren’t a scam in themselves. But they aren’t SFC-licensed, there’s no investor protection, and fees reach 13% plus HK$100. The bigger danger is fraudsters using them: if someone tells you to buy Bitcoin at an ATM and send it to them, call 18222. More in scams and licence checks.
Can I sell crypto in Quarry Bay?
None of the 14 machines buys back crypto. The only sell-capable machine on Hong Kong Island is COINHERO’s 24-hour flagship at 1A Canal Road East, Causeway Bay; in Kowloon East there’s one at Yue Man Square in Kwun Tong (10:00–22:00). Other routes are in our cash-out guide.
