Of all crypto prices, USDT to HKD is the easiest to predict. USDT (Tether) is built to track one US dollar, and the Hong Kong dollar is kept by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) within a band of 7.75 to 7.85 per US dollar under the Linked Exchange Rate System. In normal conditions, then, 1 USDT is worth roughly HK$7.75 to HK$7.85. The converter at the top of this page uses CoinGecko's live USDT/HKD reference price to estimate how many Hong Kong dollars you would get for your USDT; tap another coin to convert that instead.
This page is about the rate and about converting in both directions: USDT to HKD, HKD to USDT, and what each really costs. If your question is where you can still buy USDT after the Stablecoins Ordinance, see buying USDT in Hong Kong.
How the USDT to HKD rate is set
Think of the USDT/HKD rate as two numbers multiplied together: the US dollar's rate in Hong Kong dollars, and USDT's price in US dollars. The first is pinned by the peg and can only move between 7.75 and 7.85, so it barely moves. The second usually sits very close to 1, but can drift to a small premium or discount when markets are stressed, redemptions spike or local supply and demand get out of balance.
Take an example. With USD/HKD at 7.80 and USDT at exactly one dollar, 1,000 USDT is worth HK$7,800 on paper. What reaches your account depends on the channel. A 1% spread costs you HK$78; a 5% spread costs HK$390. "Today's rate" is the starting line; the channel you choose decides where you finish.
The shop figures come from third-party listings with unclear dates. They show how wide spreads can get, not what anyone is quoting today. No systematic public data on USDT spreads in Hong Kong exists.

The bars below compare the cost levels published or reported for converting roughly HK$10,000 worth of USDT. Sources vary, and some figures are secondary or inferred, so read them as orders of magnitude rather than quotes.
The pattern is simple: regulated, large trades have tight spreads; cash, small, on-the-spot trades have wide ones. Note too that Hong Kong's crypto ATMs mainly handle coins like BTC and ETH. COINHERO machines do not support USDT, and although Localcoin's FAQ mentions USDT, none of its kiosks is flagged for it.
USDT to HKD: how to sell USDT
If you already hold USDT and want Hong Kong dollars in the bank, these are the realistic options. Two things matter most: whether you are a retail or professional investor, and whether the money lands cleanly in an account in your own name.
| Route | How it works | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Licensed platform / broker | Deposit USDT, sell for HKD, withdraw by FPS or bank transfer to your own account | USDT mostly PI-only; Victory lists a USDT/HKD pair (secondary) |
| Shop that buys USDT | Send USDT to the shop, collect HKD cash | VBIT now only buys USDT from customers; shops are not VA-licensed; cash safety |
| P2P / C2C | Match with a buyer who pays you by FPS | Scam money can get your account frozen |
| Crypto card | Top up a card with USDT, spend or withdraw HKD at ATMs | RedotPay shows only a money lender’s licence; FX and ATM fees |
- Check eligibility
Confirm in the licensed platform or broker app that your account can deposit and sell USDT, and on which network.
- Deposit on the right network
Send USDT on the network the platform shows (for example ERC-20). Test with a small amount and check the address character by character. You may be asked where the USDT came from.
- Sell for HKD
Compare the live quote with the converter’s reference price; the gap is the spread you are paying.
- Withdraw to your own account
Use FPS or bank transfer to an account in your name. Never receive the money through someone else’s account.
- Keep records
Save trade confirmations and transfer receipts for any bank questions about source of funds, and for tax purposes.

USDT to cash in Hong Kong: ATMs and shops
Plenty of people search for a way to turn USDT into banknotes on the spot, expecting a machine or a counter on every corner. The reality is thinner. Of about 202 crypto ATMs in Hong Kong, only eight COINHERO machines buy coins back, and COINHERO supports BTC, ETH, BCH, DOGE and XAUt, not USDT. CoinUnit handles sales through an online request form, and Localcoin offers no selling at all. On the operators' own data, swapping USDT for cash at an ATM is essentially not an option.
Among shops, VBIT now states on its website that USDT is "withdrawal only", meaning it buys USDT from customers but does not sell it, which fits the government's position that shops may not offer USDT to the public. Shops still hold no virtual asset licence, though, and the coming dealer regime will have no transitional period. The physical risk is real too: a Mong Kok shop owner at 608 Nathan Road was attacked by knife-wielding men at closing time in December 2025, and Sheung Wan saw several large cash robberies linked to money changers within months. If what you need is Hong Kong dollars, a bank transfer is always safer than carrying a bag of cash.
HKD to USDT: the other direction
Going from HKD to USDT, the hard part is finding someone allowed to sell. Since the Stablecoins Ordinance took effect on 1 August 2025, only stablecoins from HKMA-licensed issuers may be offered to Hong Kong retail investors, and USDT is not one of them. The government has said crypto shops are not permitted offerors. USDT on licensed platforms is mostly reserved for professional investors, which is why many retail users turn to offshore exchanges and pay by card, with no SFC protection. We analyse each route on the buy USDT page rather than repeat it here.
On price, buying is usually dearer than selling. A shop or merchant buys USDT from you below the US dollar rate and sells it to you above it. The converter shows a mid reference price, so expect to pay a little more HKD than it suggests.
A student in Sha Tin receives 1,000 USDT from family overseas and needs Hong Kong dollars for rent.
A stranger on P2P paying by FPS might offer the best-looking rate. But if that money came from a scam, his ZA account could be frozen and the rent money locked up with it. The safer move is to check first whether a licensed channel will handle his USDT. If none will, paying a slightly wider spread for a traceable, documented route is worth it.
Bank accounts, freezes and source of funds
Hong Kong banks are cautious about crypto-linked money. The usual cause of a freeze is not that you sold USDT, but that whoever paid you used scam proceeds or a mule account. In May 2025 police broke up a HK$118 million laundering ring that used more than 500 mule accounts, with some funds converted at crypto shops in Tsim Sha Tsui. Cases like that make banks wary of unexplained FPS credits.

Protecting yourself is not complicated: receive money only into accounts in your own name; never receive or forward funds for anyone else; keep a record of every conversion; and avoid AlipayHK and WeChat Pay for anything crypto-related, since both have long banned it. If you think you've been scammed, call the 18222 Anti-Scam Helpline or use the resources of the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre.
HKD stablecoins: you may not need USDT much longer
Plenty of people swap into USDT because they want a stable digital asset they can move around the clock. Hong Kong's licensed HKD stablecoins are aimed squarely at that need. On 10 April 2026 the HKMA granted the first issuer licences to HSBC and Anchorpoint (a Standard Chartered, HKT and Animoca joint venture). Anchorpoint's HKDAP opened to institutions and professional investors on 12 August 2026, distributed through HashKey and OSL, with retail targeted for as early as end-2026. HSBC named its coin HSBC RedCoin on 30 September and plans to launch it in the second half of 2026 through PayMe and the HSBC HK app; as of 6 October it had not been issued.
The 2026 Policy Address also committed to promoting trading of licensed stablecoins on licensed platforms. As HKD stablecoins spread, some of today's "USDT to HKD" demand may become "HKD stablecoin to HKD", which is designed to redeem 1:1. Follow developments on our HKD stablecoin page. Frequently asked questions
How much is 1 USDT in HKD?
USDT is designed to track one US dollar, and the Hong Kong dollar is held between 7.75 and 7.85 per US dollar under the Linked Exchange Rate System. So 1 USDT is normally worth roughly HK$7.75 to HK$7.85, nudged up or down by any premium or discount on USDT itself. The converter at the top uses CoinGecko's live reference price; the price you actually get will be lower once spread and fees are applied.
Where is the best USDT to HKD rate in Hong Kong?
There is no single winner; it depends on size and on who you are. Public figures we found: OSL says spreads on large OTC trades are typically within 0.5%, shop quotes tend to sit around 0.5% to 1% from the US dollar rate, and one shop's buy and sell prices were about 5.8% apart. Always ask for both sides of the quote and add any transfer fees.
How do I convert USDT to HKD into my bank account?
The cleanest route is to sell on a licensed channel you are eligible for and withdraw HKD by FPS or bank transfer to an account in your own name. Because USDT on licensed platforms is mostly reserved for professional investors, retail users should first check in the app whether their account can deposit and sell USDT. See the selling section below and our cash-out guide.
Can selling USDT get my bank account frozen?
Yes, particularly through P2P. If the buyer pays you with fraud proceeds, your bank can freeze the account; one Hong Kong user reported more than HK$200,000 frozen after selling USDT via C2C. Selling through a licensed platform into your own account is far lower risk, but banks may still ask about the source of funds, so keep your records.
Is it safe to swap USDT for cash in Hong Kong?
The track record is poor. Customers have received hell banknotes in Tsim Sha Tsui and lost cash at an upstairs shop in Kwun Tong, and in June 2026 a man lost 1.6 million USDT to a fake OTC dealer. For any significant sum, prefer bank transfers. If you must use a shop, read our crypto shop guide first.
