If you are wondering how to buy Ethereum in Hong Kong, the good news is that ETH is one of the easiest coins to get through regulated channels. Ether, the native coin of the Ethereum network, counts as an "eligible large-cap" asset under the SFC's retail rules, so nearly every licensed platform and bank app serving retail clients carries it. As of October 2026 there are 13 SFC-licensed trading platforms and four spot Ether ETFs on HKEX.

Two things make ETH different from Bitcoin, and both affect where you should buy. Every Ethereum transfer costs a network fee ("gas"), so withdrawals need a little planning. And ETH can be staked, which the SFC opened up to licensed platforms and ETFs in 2025. We walk through each route below; for Bitcoin, see buying Bitcoin.

The grid shows which channels sell ETH, whether you can withdraw it, whether HKD funding works and whether staking is on offer. "~" means partly, or that we could not fully verify the detail.

Staking is marked partial for licensed platforms because the SFC permits it but we could not confirm which platforms have switched it on for retail clients. The ETF row shows partial for "buy ETH" because you buy fund units, not Ether itself.

Licensed platforms: the regulated way to own ETH

HashKey Exchange (CE number BPL992) says on its site that retail clients can buy BTC and ETH with HKD and USD. OSL (BPJ213) opens four coins to retail: BTC, ETH, SOL and XRP. Both take FPS and eDDA deposits, and OSL adds Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay. ETH bought on either can be withdrawn to your own wallet, MetaMask or a hardware device, once the address is verified.

Expect a knowledge test and risk assessment at sign-up, plus an exposure limit set for retail clients. In return, your ETH sits with the platform's associated trust company, mostly in cold storage, under an SFC licence. HashKey's base trading fee for regular users is reported at 0.29%; OSL's Flash Trade charges no commission, with the cost in the spread. The full head-to-head is in HashKey vs OSL.

Instant-buy screens are convenient; compare the spread, not just the commission.

Bank and broker apps: easy entry, coins stay put

ZA Bank has offered BTC and ETH through HashKey since November 2024, reportedly at a 1.5% platform fee plus HK$15 per trade (secondary source). Mox launched in January 2026 with BTC, ETH and now SOL, and is waiving buy commission until 31 December 2026. Tiger Brokers offers ETH through YAX with a 0.05% handling fee on its official schedule, and Futu routes through its own licensed platform, PantherTrade, though we could not verify its current crypto fees.

Most of these apps use an omnibus account, which means the bank or broker holds the ETH for you at a licensed platform. You generally cannot withdraw it, and you certainly cannot use it on Ethereum itself. Victory Securities' VictoryX is a rare broker that advertises token transfers in and out. For pure price exposure, that is fine. If you want to use the network, choose a route that lets you withdraw. Fees per app are in the bank and broker comparison.

ETH to HKD pricing: Hong Kong dollars or US dollars?

The converter at the top of the page uses CoinGecko's ETH/HKD reference price to estimate how much Ether your Hong Kong dollars buy. When you actually trade, the quote currency differs by channel. HashKey says retail clients can buy ETH with HKD and USD; OSL accepts HKD and USD deposits; Tiger trades virtual assets in US dollars, converting HKD in the app with same-day settlement; Mox settles its crypto trades in USD. If your money is in HKD and the platform prices in USD, there is a currency conversion in the middle, and its cost does not always appear in the fee column.

Ether ETFs: 3046, 3179, 3009 and 3425

Three spot Ether ETFs listed on HKEX on 30 April 2024 alongside the first Bitcoin funds, and MicroBit added a fourth in August 2025. The codes below are the HKD counters; MicroBit's code comes from a secondary source, so confirm it on HKEX before trading.

Harvest Ether Spot ETF317930 April 2024
Bosera HashKey Ether ETF300930 April 2024
MicroBit Ether Spot ETF3425August 2025 (secondary)

CSOP also runs an Ether futures ETF (3068), which tracks futures rather than spot ETH.

An ETF suits someone who already has a brokerage account and wants ETH exposure without keys or a new platform. The trade-offs: you can only trade during HKEX hours, there is a management fee, and the ETH inside is never yours to move or use. Whether mainland residents can buy these funds depends on their broker and mainland rules; we do not advise on that.

Staking: what the SFC allows

Staking means locking ETH to help validate the Ethereum network in return for rewards. On 7 April 2025 the SFC issued circulars allowing licensed trading platforms to offer staking to clients and revising its virtual asset fund circular so SFC-authorised funds and ETFs can stake. A LegCo paper from May 2026 says three authorised virtual asset ETFs had been approved to stake by early 2026; we could not confirm which three. In September 2025 a joint SFC–HKMA circular updated the terms for brokers dealing through omnibus accounts, including a section on staking.

Pros

  • Staking on a licensed platform is supervised by the SFC
  • Extra yield on ETH you were holding anyway
  • An ETF lets you benefit indirectly with no setup

Cons

  • Unstaking can take time, so you may not be able to sell instantly
  • Validator errors can lead to slashing
  • Rewards are not guaranteed and platforms take a cut
  • Retail availability is still patchy; check each provider

Offshore, CEX.IO lists Hong Kong as supported for its savings and staking product, but it is not licensed by the SFC, so Hong Kong protections don't apply.

Our take

Before you buy ETH, ask whether you will ever touch the Ethereum network.

If not, an ETF or bank app does the job without the burden of a private key. If you want to stake, send ETH or use applications built on Ethereum, buy on a licensed platform that allows withdrawals and budget for gas from day one. Most people who end up in the wrong channel didn't overpay on fees; they just never decided what the ETH was for.

Gas fees and withdrawing to your own wallet

Every Ethereum transfer pays a network fee in ETH, and that fee rises and falls with network demand. Platforms usually cover it with a fixed withdrawal charge. Victory Securities' published schedule (remark dated 10 September 2025) is a useful reference: 0.0004 ETH for the first withdrawal of the day, 0.0009 ETH after that. On a small withdrawal, that charge can be a meaningful slice.

The first time you withdraw from a licensed platform to a private wallet, the platform must confirm the wallet is yours under paragraph 12.14 of the SFC's anti-money-laundering guideline, typically by message signing or a small test transfer. HashKey reportedly supports signing with wallets such as MetaMask, Ledger and Trezor. After that the address is whitelisted. Above all, check the network: ETH must go to an Ethereum mainnet address, and choosing the wrong network can mean losing it. Wallet options are covered in crypto wallets.

Buying ETH with cash at an ATM

If you want a small amount of ETH without opening an account, ATMs work, at a price. Per operator data on 6 October 2026, COINHERO's 88 machines support BTC and ETH among others, charging unregistered users 13% plus HK$100 (6.5% for registered members) with a HK$500 minimum. CoinUnit's 77 machines support ETH on ERC-20, take only HK$500 and HK$1,000 notes, and show the fee on screen. Localcoin's kiosks are also flagged for ETH.

Hong Kong skyline at night in fog

Selling ETH for cash is harder. Only eight COINHERO machines buy coins back, at 13% plus HK$25, and which coins each accepts is shown on its screen. CoinUnit takes sale requests through an online form. For larger amounts, selling on a licensed platform and withdrawing HKD by FPS is usually far cheaper; see cashing out.

Whichever route you choose, this page compares ways to buy and is not investment advice. Ether's price swings hard in both directions, so invest only what you can afford to lose, and check a platform's exact web address before logging in, since clones of licensed brands keep appearing on the SFC alert list.

Frequently asked questions

How do I buy Ethereum in Hong Kong?

The simplest regulated route is an SFC-licensed platform such as HashKey Exchange or OSL: pass the knowledge test, fund by FPS or eDDA, and buy ETH in HKD or USD. ZA Bank, Mox, Futu and Tiger also offer ETH inside their apps, usually without withdrawals. Alternatively, buy an HKEX-listed Ether ETF such as 3046, 3179 or 3009 in a normal brokerage account.

Is there an Ethereum ETF in Hong Kong?

Yes. Three spot Ether ETFs listed on HKEX on 30 April 2024: ChinaAMC (3046), Harvest (3179) and Bosera HashKey (3009). MicroBit added a fourth (3425, secondary source) in August 2025. They hold ETH on your behalf, so you get price exposure without keys, but you cannot withdraw coins. See our crypto ETF guide.

Can retail investors stake ETH in Hong Kong?

The rules allow it. On 7 April 2025 the SFC issued circulars letting licensed trading platforms offer staking and letting SFC-authorised virtual asset funds and ETFs stake. We could not confirm which platforms currently offer ETH staking to retail clients or on what terms, so check inside the app and read the unbonding and slashing terms.

How much does it cost to withdraw ETH to my own wallet?

It depends on the platform and how busy the Ethereum network is. As one published example, Victory Securities charges 0.0004 ETH for the first withdrawal of the day and 0.0009 ETH after that. Before your first withdrawal to a private wallet, a licensed platform will ask you to sign a message or send a small test amount to prove the wallet is yours.

Can I buy ETH with cash at a Hong Kong crypto ATM?

Yes, at many machines. COINHERO supports ETH at 13% plus HK$100 for unregistered users; CoinUnit supports ETH on the ERC-20 network with fees shown on screen; Localcoin's kiosks are also flagged for ETH. It is far pricier than a licensed platform. Locations are on the ATM map.
