Verdict: is the OSL exchange worth it?
The most complete set of payment options among licensed venues, and the shortest retail menu
First licensee, HKEX-listed parent, everything from FPS to Apple Pay, and a mature OTC desk. It loses points for offering retail just four coins, burying Flash Trade costs in the spread and an official fee page we could not load.
OSL ranks third in our October 2026 Hong Kong table with a score of 8.8. Like HashKey Exchange in second place, it is SFC-licensed with a parent listed on HKEX. The differences are about payment and pricing: OSL takes cards and Apple Pay, HashKey doesn’t; OSL’s instant trades advertise zero commission but carry a spread, while HashKey charges an explicit fee of around 0.29%.
If you want to pay by card and still have Hong Kong regulation behind the platform, OSL is close to the only mainstream answer. If you just plan to buy a fixed amount of Bitcoin over FPS each month, both work, and the deciding factor is the final price you get. We compare the two line by line in HashKey vs OSL.
Licence and background
OSL Exchange is operated by OSL Digital Securities Limited, which obtained its SFC licence on 15 December 2020 under the earlier opt-in regime. That made it Hong Kong’s first licensed virtual asset trading platform, CE number BPJ213. In August 2023, OSL and HashKey became the first two platforms approved to serve retail clients, according to press coverage. The website states it holds SFC Type 1, 4, 7 and 9 licences plus AMLO licensing, and claims “50+ licences across 10+ regions”, which is a company claim.
The parent, OSL Group, is listed on HKEX under 863; it was called BC Technology Group until a January 2024 rename. In February 2026 OSL launched USDGO, a US dollar stablecoin issued by Anchorage Digital Bank with OSL as brand operator and distributor. In August 2026 it became one of the first distributors of the HKD stablecoin HKDAP, which for now is an institutional and professional-investor beta. On 4 September 2026 OSL described itself as Hong Kong’s largest platform by spot and stablecoin volume, again in its own words.
OSL fees
OSL has two ways to trade. Flash Trade is the instant buy-and-sell screen aimed at beginners, and OSL’s own guide says it carries 0% trading fees. The cost sits in the quoted spread, so zero commission is not the same as zero cost. Pro Trade is the order-book interface; third-party sources quote 0% maker and 0.05% taker plus an HKD–USD spread of around 0.06%, none of which OSL confirms on a page we could read. When we tried OSL’s fees page it returned a 404.
| Item | OSL | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Flash Trade | 0% commission | Cost is in the spread (official guide) |
| Pro Trade | 0% maker / 0.05% taker | Third-party figure, unconfirmed |
| FPS / bank deposit | Depends on your bank | No OSL fee listed |
| Card / Apple Pay | As shown at checkout | Issuer may treat as cash advance |
| Minimum first deposit | HK$10,000 (reported) | Not officially confirmed |

The most reliable way to compare OSL with anyone else is to compare the final fill at the same moment. Buy HK$10,000 of Bitcoin on Flash Trade and you won’t see a separate fee line, but the price will sit a little above the mid-market rate; on HashKey you will see a fee of roughly HK$29. For someone buying a few thousand dollars a month the gap is usually small, and convenience of funding matters more.
Deposits and withdrawals: the widest choice among licensed venues
According to OSL’s guide dated 25 February 2026, it supports bank transfer, FPS, eDDA, Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay, in HKD or USD. That is its clearest selling point: among the 13 licensed platforms, few accept both FPS and cards.
One caution on cards. Many Hong Kong issuers code crypto purchases as quasi-cash, which means a cash-advance fee, interest from day one and no rewards. A licensed platform accepting your card does not mean your bank will treat it as an ordinary purchase; a debit card or FPS is usually cheaper. To cash out, you sell to HKD and transfer back to your bank. Under the SFC’s AML guideline, any licensed platform must confirm that a self-hosted wallet belongs to you before withdrawing to it; we could not confirm OSL’s specific withdrawal coins and fees from an official page, so check the app. More in cashing out crypto.

What retail can trade: BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP
SFC rules let licensed platforms offer retail clients only “eligible large-cap” tokens, meaning those included in at least two indices from independent providers. That is why OSL’s retail menu is four coins long. Professional investors (individuals with a portfolio of at least HK$8 million) see a longer list; one aggregator says more than 60, which we have not verified.

For Hong Kong retail investors who want XRP, OSL is one of the few licensed routes that clearly offers it. Whether a licensed platform may offer USDT to retail depends on the Stablecoins Ordinance and SFC rules; see buying USDT in Hong Kong.
The OSL OTC desk
OTC is where OSL is strongest with institutions. It describes itself as Hong Kong’s largest OTC desk, quotes around the clock, settles in HKD, USD, USDT or USDC “in under 24 hours”, and says spreads are “typically within 0.5%” (OSL guide, 16 March 2026). It does not publish a minimum ticket. The desk mainly serves institutions, high-net-worth individuals, family offices and professional investors, though retail clients can use OTC for certain pairs such as XRP/HKD. For large trades and other providers, see crypto OTC desks.
Safety and impersonation
OSL’s custody business holds a SOC 2 Type 2 report, and the website says cold-wallet custody is insured without naming the amount; the “up to US$1 billion” figure that circulates comes from press reports. As a licensee it must follow SFC rules on asset segregation, cold-storage ratios and cybersecurity.
How to open an OSL account
This follows OSL’s published guidance and the SFC’s general requirements for licensed platforms rather than a test of our own; OSL does not publish an official approval time. Before you start, decide how you will mainly fund the account, because that shapes what every later purchase costs.
- Check the site and app
Use only osl.com or official app stores, and watch for clones such as osloip.vip.
- Submit ID
Identity document and proof of address, per the usual licensed-platform verification.
- Complete the assessments
Answer the risk-profiling and virtual-asset knowledge questions; your retail exposure limit is set from the result.
- Fund the account
FPS, eDDA, bank transfer, or Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay. An HK$10,000 minimum first deposit is reported but unconfirmed.
- Start small
Make a small first Flash Trade and compare the fill with the market price to see the spread.
Once you are set up, Flash Trade is enough if you plan to buy Bitcoin once a month over FPS. If you will trade often, it is worth learning Pro Trade’s order book and comparing the real cost of each yourself.
Who OSL suits
Pros
- Hong Kong’s first SFC licensee (BPJ213), HKEX-listed parent
- FPS, eDDA, Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay all accepted
- Flash Trade at 0% commission with a simple interface
- XRP available to retail since July 2026
- Mature OTC desk settling in HKD, USD, USDT or USDC
- SOC 2 Type 2 report for the custody business
Cons
- Retail limited to BTC, ETH, SOL and XRP
- Flash Trade cost hides in the spread, hard to compare
- Official fee page unavailable; minimum deposit unconfirmed
- Card deposits may be treated as cash advances by your bank
- Insurance amount not stated on the official site
- Has been impersonated, so check the domain
Good fit: people who want to pay by card or Apple Pay but still want Hong Kong regulation; retail investors after XRP; professional investors and institutions who need large OTC trades settled in HKD or USD.
Poor fit: anyone wanting tokens beyond the big four; traders who prefer an explicit per-trade fee and order-book trading (HashKey may suit better); people who would rather buy inside a bank or broker app they already use.
OSL’s zero commission is real, but the cost doesn’t disappear; it moves into the price.
The first time you use Flash Trade, open a second price source and compare the final fill so you know roughly what the spread is. Then decide whether Pro Trade or another platform suits you better. Between licensed platforms, the difference is rarely the licence; it is details like this.
An example: a professional in Central with an existing credit card wants to buy HK$5,000 of Ether by Apple Pay one weekend, then top up monthly over FPS. OSL can handle both methods inside a licensed platform; just check first whether the card issuer treats the purchase as a cash advance, and switch to a debit card or FPS if it does.
Alternatives to OSL
For explicit fees and FPS deposits: HashKey Exchange at a 0.29% base rate. To buy inside an app you already use: Futu with PantherTrade or ZA Bank. To buy by card with far more coins, accepting no Hong Kong regulation: CEX.IO. To hold Bitcoin through a securities account without touching a wallet: HKEX-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs. Every review is on the reviews hub, and scoring is explained in our methodology. OSL’s details can be checked at osl.com.
Frequently asked questions
Is OSL a safe exchange in Hong Kong?
OSL is run by OSL Digital Securities Limited, which on 15 December 2020 became the first virtual asset trading platform licensed by the SFC (CE number BPJ213). Its parent, OSL Group, is listed on HKEX (863). The custody business has a SOC 2 Type 2 report and cold-wallet assets are insured, though the widely quoted cover figure comes from press reports.
How can I deposit on OSL?
OSL accepts bank transfer, FPS, eDDA, Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay, in HKD or USD. It is one of very few SFC-licensed platforms that takes cards and Apple Pay. Bear in mind that a Hong Kong card issuer may treat a crypto purchase as a cash advance; see buying crypto by card.
Which coins can retail investors trade on OSL?
As of October 2026, OSL retail clients can trade four coins: Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and XRP. XRP opened to retail on 29 July 2026 via Flash Trade (XRP/USD) and OTC (XRP/USD and XRP/HKD). Professional investors get a wider list.
What are OSL’s fees and minimum deposit?
Flash Trade is advertised at 0% commission, with the cost built into the spread. Third-party sources quote Pro Trade at 0% maker and 0.05% taker, which OSL has not confirmed on a page we could read. An HK$10,000 minimum first deposit is reported but also unconfirmed. Bank and FPS charges depend on your bank.
Is OSL a scam? How do I avoid fake OSL sites?
OSL itself is licensed, but it has been impersonated: on 14 March 2025 the SFC put the clone domain osloip.vip on its alert list. Use only osl.com and check the company name and CE number BPJ213 against the SFC list.
