Is Coinbase available in Hong Kong? The short answer
Coinbase holds no licence from Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) and has never applied for one. It is not among the 13 licensed platforms, the six applicants or the 16 returned and withdrawn applications on the SFC’s list as of 6 October 2026. Whether a Hong Kong resident can open and use a Coinbase account today is genuinely unclear, and we would rather say so than guess.
What is clear is the legal frame. Buying and holding crypto is legal in Hong Kong, and we know of no rule that makes it an offence for a resident to hold an account on an offshore exchange. The licensing duty sits with platforms that operate in, or actively market to, Hong Kong. So the useful question is not “is Coinbase legal in Hong Kong?” but “what protection do I have if I use it?” The answer to that one is: none of Hong Kong’s.
What we know, and what we don’t
Searches like “can I use Coinbase in Hong Kong”, “coinbase hong kong payment method” and “coinbase 香港 lihkg” show people looking for a straight answer. Here is the evidence as it stood on 6 October 2026, graded honestly.
| Claim | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase has no SFC licence and never applied | Confirmed | SFC list, checked 6 Oct 2026 |
| Hong Kong is restricted or unsupported for retail | Reported | Secondary summaries, 2026 (low quality) |
| A Hong Kong account could be opened | Reported | DL News, June 2024 |
| Coinbase’s own supported-countries page | Not read | Returned access errors to research tools |
| HKD or FPS funding | No evidence | Not found in any source |
| Custody for some Hong Kong ETF issuers | Unconfirmed | Mixed secondary sources |
We do not repeat forum claims we cannot verify. Check what Coinbase shows you at sign-up; it is the only authoritative answer for your account.
The two reports pull in opposite directions. Secondary write-ups from 2026 describe Hong Kong as restricted or unsupported for retail customers, but they are low-quality sources. DL News reported in June 2024 that it could open a Coinbase account from Hong Kong, but that is more than two years old. Coinbase’s own country page could not be read when our research checked it. Put together, we cannot tell you that Coinbase supports Hong Kong residents, and we cannot tell you with certainty that it doesn’t.
One more thread you may see online is that Coinbase provides custody for some Hong Kong spot ETF issuers. Our sources on that are mixed, so we treat it as unconfirmed. Even if true, it would concern institutional custody for fund managers, not retail accounts. If you want regulated Bitcoin exposure through your Hong Kong brokerage, see our Bitcoin ETF guide.
What the SFC says
Since 1 June 2023, operating a virtual asset trading platform in Hong Kong, or actively marketing one to Hong Kong investors, requires an SFC licence under Part 5B of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing Ordinance (Cap. 615). The SFC’s public advice to investors is to use licensed platforms only. Licensed venues keep client assets in trust, mostly in cold storage, assess retail clients’ knowledge, set exposure limits and offer retail investors only eligible large-cap tokens.
Coinbase (from Hong Kong)
- No SFC licence, never applied
- Hong Kong access unconfirmed
- No HKD or FPS funding found
- Disputes under Coinbase’s own terms
SFC-licensed platform
- CE number on the SFC list
- HKD by FPS or eDDA
- Client assets in trust, cold storage
- Retail knowledge test and limits
Coinbase did not appear in the recent entries of the SFC’s suspicious platforms alert list when checked on 6 October 2026. That list only shows recent additions, so it is not proof of absence; more to the point, not being on the alert list is not the same as being licensed.
Risks of using Coinbase from Hong Kong

Account status risk. If Hong Kong is unsupported, an account opened from here could be restricted later, possibly when you want to withdraw. Do not describe your location inaccurately to get around country rules; we do not cover VPNs or similar workarounds, and doing so breaches the terms you accept.
No HKD route. Without HKD or FPS, you would be paying in foreign currency, often by card. Some Hong Kong issuers code crypto purchases as cash advances, with extra fees and interest from day one.
Brand impersonation. Well-known names attract fake apps and “Coinbase support” scams. Hong Kong logged 5,135 online investment fraud cases in 2025, with HK$3.58 billion lost and about a third involving virtual assets. Type the domain yourself and never share a recovery phrase.
How to move funds from Coinbase to a licensed platform
- Open a licensed account
Verify with HashKey Exchange or OSL: HKID or passport, proof of Hong Kong address and a knowledge assessment.
- Check coin support
Retail lists are short. OSL’s retail tokens are BTC, ETH, SOL and XRP.
- Use a verified wallet
Licensed platforms apply travel-rule checks and may verify that you own the sending wallet by message signing or a small test transfer. Withdrawing first to your own self-custody wallet and whitelisting it is usually smoother.
- Test the route
Send a small amount on the correct network, confirm arrival, then move the balance.
- Sell and withdraw HKD
Sell for HKD and withdraw by FPS or bank transfer to your own account. See the cash-out guide.
Licensed alternatives and our pick
If you came to Coinbase for simplicity, Hong Kong’s licensed platforms are the closer match than you might expect: HKD by FPS, local ID checks and a regulator. HashKey Exchange (CE BPL992) and OSL (CE BPJ213) are the largest; HashKey vs OSL compares them, and the full list covers all 13. If you would rather buy inside a bank or broker app, see bank and broker apps.
We can’t confirm that Coinbase supports Hong Kong residents, and Coinbase hasn’t sought a Hong Kong licence. That uncertainty alone is a reason not to make it your main account here.
Build your Hong Kong set-up around a licensed platform for HKD, and an international platform only where its terms clearly include you.
For that international slot, our editor’s pick is CEX.IO. Founded in 2013, it does not list Hong Kong among its 30 unsupported jurisdictions and serves Hong Kong customers through CEX OVRS LLC in Nevis. You can buy with Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay (0.49%–4.99% plus a service charge) across 300+ assets, with spot fees up to 0.25%. It is regulated elsewhere, including US FinCEN registration, but not by the SFC: Hong Kong investor protection does not apply, and there is no HKD or FPS funding.
Coinbase for Hong Kong users: 5.0 / 10
A reputable global exchange that has never sought a Hong Kong licence, with unconfirmed Hong Kong access and no HKD or FPS funding that we could find. Fine for understanding the market; not the account to build a Hong Kong set-up around.
Frequently asked questions
Is Coinbase available in Hong Kong?
Not in any confirmed, supported way. Coinbase has never applied for an SFC licence. Several secondary sources describe Hong Kong as unsupported for retail, but DL News reported opening an account in 2024, and Coinbase’s own country page could not be read when checked. Treat availability as unconfirmed and check what Coinbase shows you at sign-up. Licensed options: SFC-licensed platforms.
Is Coinbase licensed in Hong Kong?
No. Coinbase is not on the SFC’s list of licensed platforms, not an applicant and not among withdrawn applications: it never applied. Any site that calls Coinbase “licensed in Hong Kong” is wrong as of October 2026. Hong Kong’s licensed platforms are on the SFC list with CE numbers.
Is it illegal for me to use Coinbase in Hong Kong?
We know of no rule making it an offence for a Hong Kong resident to hold an account on an offshore exchange, and buying crypto is legal. The licensing duty falls on platforms that operate in or actively market to Hong Kong. The practical issue is protection: on an unlicensed platform, Hong Kong investor protection does not apply.
What payment methods does Coinbase accept in Hong Kong?
We could not verify any Coinbase payment method for Hong Kong residents, and we found no evidence of HKD or FPS funding. If HKD deposits matter to you, licensed platforms such as HashKey Exchange and OSL accept FPS and eDDA. See our FPS deposit guide.
How do I withdraw from Coinbase to a Hong Kong bank?
If you hold coins on Coinbase, the dependable route is to move them to an SFC-licensed platform, ideally via a self-custody wallet you have verified with that platform, sell for HKD and withdraw by FPS to your own account. Send a small test first. Full routes in our cash-out guide.
