Yau Ma Tei: six crypto ATMs, every one in a laundromat

No mall machines and no staffed shops: Yau Ma Tei’s six crypto ATMs are all inside 24-hour self-service laundries around Temple Street, Kansu Street and Tung On Street. It’s the walking link between Jordan and Mong Kok, and good for small late-night buys.

If you’re hunting for a Bitcoin ATM in Yau Ma Tei, follow the smell of fabric softener. As of 6 October 2026, COINHERO, CoinUnit and Localcoin list six crypto ATMs here between them, and every single one sits inside a 24-hour self-service laundromat. There is no mall machine in the district. Temple Street even has two operators a few doors apart: COINHERO at Washing Bo, 36–40 Temple Street, and CoinUnit at C+ Laundry, number 26.

These locations come from the operators’ own published lists, which we downloaded and checked on 6 October 2026. We didn’t visit them. “Listed” doesn’t mean “working today”: machines go offline for repairs or move, so check the operator’s site before heading out.

Here are all six. The first five are an easy walk from Yau Ma Tei station. The COINHERO machine the operator labels “Austin” is on Man Wai Street and is actually closer to Austin station, which suits anyone coming from the West Kowloon side.

Geographically the machines fall into three groups. The first is at the southern end of Temple Street, where the two units sit close together and the night market brings the biggest evening crowds. The second is on Kansu Street and Tung On Street, residential streets west of the station, with one CoinUnit machine each. The third is Localcoin’s 365 Laundry on Reclamation Street, and the operator’s directions are precise: leave Yau Ma Tei station by Exit C, head west along Man Ming Lane towards Portland Street, turn left onto Reclamation Street, about six minutes on foot.

Every machine here runs 24 hours, and that is the real difference from TST and Mong Kok, where many machines sit in malls and shut around 10pm. For night-shift workers, or anyone who would rather complete a purchase when the street is quiet, Yau Ma Tei is actually the more convenient stop.

How the three operators differ

Yau Ma Tei is one of the few districts where all three major operators have machines, and each plays by its own rules. A minute of homework saves you from bringing the wrong notes or getting a shock at the fee screen.

OperatorPublished feeTakes HK$100 notesSell at machineID threshold published
COINHERO (2)13% + HK$100✓✕✓
CoinUnit (3)✕✕✕✕
Localcoin (1)13.5% + HK$23~✕✕

COINHERO is the most transparent. It charges 13% plus HK$100 per purchase, 6.5% for registered members, with a HK$500 minimum. The first note has to be HK$1,000 or HK$500; after that, HK$100 notes are accepted. Anything over HK$100,000 in a single transaction needs registration with email, mobile number, HKID or passport, a selfie and a fingerprint. Both Yau Ma Tei COINHERO machines are buy-only. More in our COINHERO review.

CoinUnit doesn’t publish fees. Its FAQ says they can change at any time and the exact figure appears on screen. It accepts HK$500 and HK$1,000 notes only, with a HK$500 minimum, and offers BTC, ETH, DOGE, LTC and TRX. Selling isn’t done at the machine but through an online request form. See our CoinUnit review.

Localcoin needs a footnote. Its FAQ says fees “typically” range from 5% to 8%, but the machine price data embedded in every area page, including this Reclamation Street kiosk, shows a Bitcoin buy fee of 13.5% plus HK$23. The two don’t match, so we quote the higher figure and suggest you trust the screen before you confirm. Localcoin states that its ATMs don’t offer selling.

Selling or finding a person: north or south?

Yau Ma Tei has no buy-back machine, and we couldn’t verify any staffed crypto shop in the district on an operator website. If you need to turn coins into cash, or would rather deal with a human, you’ll have to leave. Both directions have something going for them:

About 1 km north

Mong Kok

  • COINHERO buy-and-sell machine on 2/F of Grand Plaza (625 and 639 Nathan Road), daily 07:00–midnight
  • Staffed shops: One Satoshi at 608 Nathan Road, VBIT on Argyle Street, Crypto HK on Nelson Street
  • 16 ATMs, the densest district in Hong Kong
South via Jordan

Tsim Sha Tsui

  • Two COINHERO buy-and-sell machines, one of them at 83–97 Nathan Road open 24 hours
  • One Satoshi at Chungking Mansions, VBIT on Humphreys Avenue
  • 10 ATMs, including two operators in K11 Art Mall

After midnight, the 24-hour machine at Tsim Sha Tsui Mansion in TST is the only nearby place to sell. During the day, Mong Kok offers more choice and is a shorter walk. Full details are on our Mong Kok Bitcoin ATMs and shops page and the Tsim Sha Tsui page.

As for a USDT exchange shop in Yau Ma Tei: beyond the fact that we couldn’t find a verified one, the Stablecoins Ordinance (Cap. 656) has applied since 1 August 2025. Only permitted offerors such as HKMA-licensed issuers, SFC-licensed firms and banks may offer specified stablecoins to the public, and the government’s LegCo reply of 10 September 2025 confirmed that OTC shops are not among them. Any shop selling you USDT today is doing so outside the regulated perimeter, and the coming dealer licensing regime has no transitional period. Legal routes are covered in our USDT guide.

Using a laundromat ATM late at night

Laundromat ATMs are convenient, but they are nothing like a bank branch: usually no staff, no security, and sometimes nobody but you. An SCMP feature in September 2026 warned that these “grey-market” machines in laundromats and claw arcades can turn users into fraud victims. A few things are worth keeping in mind:

Then there’s the cash itself. All six machines take HK$500 or HK$1,000 notes, and CoinUnit takes nothing else, so it’s easy to end up carrying thousands or tens of thousands of dollars. Counting a thick wad on the street at 2am isn’t wise. For bigger amounts, funding a licensed platform by FPS is safer and far cheaper. Finally, keep the receipt or a screenshot and note the transaction ID; if coins don’t arrive, the operator will need them.

Our take

Yau Ma Tei’s strength is that it never closes, not that it offers lots of choice.

Six machines, three operators, all open 24 hours: for locals who want a few thousand dollars of Bitcoin, that’s plenty. But there’s no buy-back machine and no verifiable shop. The moment you need to sell, move a larger sum or deal in USDT, go to Mong Kok or TST, or skip cash and use a licensed platform.

Nearby areas and online alternatives

South of Yau Ma Tei is Jordan, with five buy-only machines, four of them open around the clock. North is Mong Kok, with 16 machines and the city’s densest cluster of crypto shops. Either is a ten-to-fifteen-minute walk along Nathan Road from Temple Street. The Bitcoin ATM map shows every listed machine, and the crypto exchange shops guide compares the staffed counters.

If you don’t need cash, going online is usually better value. With a Hong Kong bank account you can fund an SFC-licensed platform such as HashKey Exchange or OSL by FPS or eDDA. If you already have Futu, Tiger or ZA Bank, see whether your bank or broker app lets you buy directly. To buy instantly with a card or Apple Pay, an international platform is quickest, but it sits outside Hong Kong regulation, and your bank may treat the payment as a cash advance. First time?
